You can ask, but…

There’s nothing wrong with asking me questions, or making requests, but people need to realize a few important things;

1. First of all, I’m a working professional, so as a “rule” I don’t do freebies.  Every once in a while, I might take on a small bit of art for someone who really asks politely, but I’m forever getting asked to illustrate graphic novels, design entire game mods, do custom gift art, or give detailed personalized instruction,  all for free.

2. Requests are cool, but my indicating I’m interested, doesn’t mean I have time, or will ever get around to it. Please don’t harass me about the car you want to see every time I post something that isn’t it.

3. This one goes for all artists, not just me. Just about everyone has a certain focussed talent. I do cars and mechanical subjects well. Not people. Never have, never will.  But despite a portfolio of 400+ artworks not including people, I get numerous requests to do characters or portraits or caricatures. People get pissed when I tell them I don’t do people.  Not everyone can draw everything, and it has nothing to do with being “closed minded” as some people think.

4. If you’d like to commission, visit Hire Us and figure that nothing of any significance is going to get done in less than 10 or twelve hours.

5. Understand that “could you do a picture of a Mazda 3?’ is a request. “Could you do a picture of a red and black fade Mazda 3, with a Seibon carbon Hood, 19 inch Volk gram-light wheels, Bridgestone Potenzas, an AIT bodykit, with Vehicle dynamics projector headlights and Sparco racing seats…?” needs to be a commission.

6. Writing a tutorial for a 3D car, covering weeks of modeling, materials creation, lighting, rendering, and post-processing, would require perhaps 1500 illustrated, written steps.  So you’re asking a professional to spend hundreds of hours to teach you his skills… for free.  Ain’t gonna happen.
